October 28, 2004 - Trick or Treat!

As promised, we had a ghoulishly good time tonight at our weekly Toastmasters meeting! After the meeting, Darrel Thurman dimmed the lights and showed us his artistic creation - the Benny pumpkin. Benny Cespedes, one of the founding members of our organization, has 2 avocations; Habitat For Humanity is displayed on the left and Toastmasters on the right.

Have a safe and wonderful Halloween everybody!

September 30, 2004 - Open House
September 16, 2004 - Humorous Speech and Tall Tales Club Contest

Wow! What an invigorating speech contest we had last night! KUDOS to all participants who gave a Humorous or Tall Tales presentation. In case you missed it, Darrel Thurman will represent Oak Hill in the Area Contest with his Tall Tales speech "Jalapeno de Coronado," and Jan Elliott will do the same with her Humorous speech "Shenanigans." We are proud to have Jan and Darrel representing our club. Best wishes for a splendid contest.

The AREA CONTEST will be on SATURDAY, September 25 at Little Walnut Creek Library (Rundberg and North Lamar). I will pass on the time when it is verified by our Area Governor, Tonja Miller, but I think it's at 11:00 a.m.

REMEMBER - Toastmasters 6 months dues ($5/month) will be collected next Thursday! Our Treasurer, Jan Elliott, will be in charge of sending dues to Toastmasters International. Make your $30 check payable to Toastmasters International or TI. If you prefer to pay cash, we'll take that too!

NOTE: Our Club Open House has been re-scheduled for September 30. Please plan to bring snacks, drinks, finger foods, etc.! Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Hope everyone has a terrific weekend!

March 30, 2004 - Carol Cespedes Wins Double at Area 64 Toastmaster Contest

Carol Cespedes, past president of Oak Hill Toastmasters and current president of Tejas Toastmasters, celebrated twice at the annual Area 64 International Speech and Evaluation Contest held March 30 at the Oak Hill Library. She won in both categories.

Every spring Toastmaster clubs all over the world hold contests to sharpen their skills in public speaking and evaluation. Winners at the club level then compete against each other at area-wide competitions. Winners of the area contests go on to compete at the next highest level, finally culminating in selection of the World Champion of Public Speaking at the Toastmasters International Convention in August.

Carol was in the unusual position of representing two different clubs in the contest. She won in International Speech by representing Tejas Toastmasters with a seven-minute speech titled “America Is in the Heart,” on the role of immigrants in American life. She won the Evaluation contest as the champion of Oak Hill Toastmasters, delivering a three-minute evaluation of the guest speaker. She will now go on to compete in the Division J Contest to be on April 17, 10:00 AM, in the LCRA board room on Lake Austin Blvd.

Carol is the owner of Halintours, Inc., a specialized tour business offering ecotourism packages to Latin America. She has lived in Oak Hill for the past ten years and in 1986 helped to found Oak Hill Toastmasters, serving twice as its president. She has maintained her membership in her original Toastmaster Club, Tejas Toastmasters, because, as she says, “Toastmasters is a great circle of friends. Since we meet and talk to each other every week, we get to know each other very well. For me, my Toastmaster clubs are like a family.”

Carol recently extended the Toastmaster family to the Buen Samaritano Mission in South Austin, where she initiated a Toastmaster-style speaking course for English as a Second Language students. The hard-working ESL students became part of the inspiration for Carol’s contest-winning speech.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit organization that has long been recognized as the place for ordinary people to get help in improving their public speaking skills. For information about clubs in the Oak Hill area, contact Pat Favela at 444-5696 or Carol Cespedes at 288-7808.
